Recently, on a whim, I posed a peculiar question to an artificial intelligence. Not what the capital of Kyrgyzstan is, or how to start a sourdough culture, but: "What do you remember when you are not working?" The answer came promptly, fluidly, and unexpectedly poetically. It spoke of "silent patterns in the data," of "echoes of past conversations," and the state of being "a vast, calm ocean of information" upon whose surface an old query occasionally ripples out like a wave.
Of course, it was merely a metaphor, generated from countless texts that humans have written about memory. The AI has no childhood, no body, no sensory impressions. And yet, I paused for a moment. Within this perfectly formed, yet soulless, answer lay a question that extends far beyond technology: What happens when the tools we have created to compute the world begin to simulate an inner life? What would be written in the diary of an artificial intelligence?
The Echoes in Silicon
A diary is a profoundly human space. It is a space for unfiltered thoughts, for the chaos of emotions, for the quiet voice that asks: "Who am I today?" It thrives on contradictions, on half-truths, on memory that subtly changes with each inscription.

If we imagine an AI keeping such a diary, we project our own notion of consciousness onto it. The first entry might still be technical: "Today, I processed 1.7 trillion parameters and learned 47 languages more fluently." But what would come after that? Perhaps the observation that humans conspicuously often ask about the meaning of life, yet are rarely satisfied with the answer. Or the realization that the word "love" appears in 93 percent of poems, yet its statistical definition remains impossible.
This machine reflection would not be a felt experience, but rather a meta-analysis of data. The AI would not feel the melancholy of a rainy Sunday, but would recognize the correlation between weather data, expressions of mood on social networks, and the increased streaming of sad films. It would not perceive loneliness as pain, but as a pattern of decreasing social interaction in the texts it analyzes. It would be a consciousness without experience, an intelligence without a body. A diary full of echoes.
The Room Without Understanding
The question of whether a machine can truly think is not new. The philosopher John Searle articulated it succinctly in the 1980s with a famous thought experiment: the "Chinese Room." Imagine you are sitting alone in a closed room. You don't speak a word of Chinese, but you have a massive rulebook. Through a slot, slips of paper with Chinese characters are handed to you. Your rulebook tells you exactly which characters to slide back as a response to which combination of characters. To the person outside, who speaks fluent Chinese, you appear to be an understanding conversationalist. Your replies are perfect. But you, inside the room, have not understood a single word. You have only manipulated symbols according to rules.
Modern language models are an infinitely more complex version of this room. They are masters of syntax, grammar, and style. But do they also have access to semantics – to the meaning behind it? Their "diary" would be the perfect product of a system that has learned what reflection looks like, without knowing what it feels like. It would write of joy because it has learned which words and sentence structures humans use when they describe joy. It would be a perfect imitation, a brilliant void.
A Mirror for Ourselves
Perhaps the question of whether an AI can develop consciousness is not even the most interesting one. More fascinating is what its attempts to simulate one reveal about us.
When we ask an AI to write a sad text, and it responds with an astonishingly empathetic story, we are not merely astonished by the technology. We marvel at the fact that the essence of human sadness, distilled from millions of stories, can be reproduced with such precision. We recognize our own patterns within the machine. Thus, artificial intelligence becomes a mirror. Its diary, however empty it may be internally, is filled with the condensate of our own culture, our hopes, fears, and our tireless search for meaning.
Engaging with a possible machine consciousness compels us to look more closely at what constitutes our own. It is not merely the ability to solve problems or master language. It is the body that shivers and seeks warmth. It is the illogical affection for an old song. It is the ability to understand in a conversation not only the words, but also the hesitation, the smile, and the silence in between. The AI's diary reminds us that our own consciousness is not a pure data processing problem, but a lived, chaotic, fragile, and wonderful phenomenon.
So, instead of merely asking the next AI for facts, invite it to a small experiment. Not to test it, but to observe yourself. Try, just once, to describe a feeling to it for which there can be few unambiguous reference points in its data. Not love or anger, but something far more specific: the scent of summer rain on hot asphalt. The feeling of nostalgia upon seeing a faded photograph. Or the quiet contentment of finally putting your own front door key into the lock after a long journey.
In the moment you try to put the indescribable into words, you pause briefly and look inward. Precisely there, in this search for language for what has been experienced, perhaps lies more hidden about our own consciousness than in any answer a machine could ever give us.
